EletroAxe with Carlinhos Brown

Posted March 24th by lucas in Arduino, Audio, Fabrication, Interactivity, Physical Computing, Processing

In January 2011 I spent new years in Bahia and was introduced to Carlinhos Brown by a close friend. Knowing that Brown is one of the most talented percussionists and musician we have in Brazil, we talked about creating a full body suit with ten sensors, which were activated each time they were hit, acting as percussion instruments on Brown’s body. The project, called EletroAxé, consisted in 10 drum pads developed with laser cutting and CNC techniques, piezo sensors, electronics, Arduino, and Processing. It was a collaboration with myself and Kyle McDonald and it was managed/ produced by Acere F.C. It involved transmitting wireless midi data, a great amount of work in production design, code, and infinite testing.

We presented the project during Carnaval in Salvador, which occurred between March 4th through March 10th. Carnaval in Salvador is one of the biggest festivals/ parties in the world. Brown played for more than 50 thousand people while commanding percussionists, musicians, and his innovative experiments for Caranval 2011.

The experiment ended up working very well, he got great feedback, and people were stunned by what he was bringing into one of the greatest festivities on earth.

Muito show o trabalho que voces fizeram: unir Carlinhos Brown a uma percussão movida a Arduino é o maior momento da Musica movida a Hardware Livre. Parabens pelo projeto e pelas conexões que levaram a poder realiza-lo.

Cool project Lucas, it combines two of my favourite things, physical computing and Brazilian music! How about persuading Carlinhos to combine the suit with my radio-controlled LED system for next year’s Carnival? ;-)http://bleaklow.com/2011/04/01/eletroax_with_carlinhos_brown.html

What an awesome concept. I’ve been a fan of Brown’s for a while now, and it’s always seemed to me like his extreme talent as a percussionist — his percussiveness? — is a manifestation of a very particular nervous system in a very particular body, if that makes any sense. Whenever I watch video of him drumming I feel like the drive he feels is somehow to make his body one with the drum, and the drumming, itself. Your suit is an awesome, awesome step in that direction. The idea of a percussive suit makes a great deal of sense to me, as though it were an extension of his nervous system, and the way it expresses itself (manifests itself?) rhythmically in his body and in his drumming.

Hey Alan, your radio controlled LED system would be cool. It would be really interesting to combine this with an LED based system.
best,

Hey Laura,
I’m really glad you liked it so much. It mean a lot to me. Everything you said makes total sense and i believe this is a path that researchers, artists, and musicians will eventually follow.
Where are you from and what do you work with?

Hi Lucas,

I’m in Ohio working on a degree right now, so I guess you could say I’m an independent scholar (ha!). Actually, my interest in Brazilian music led me back to school because I’ve been learning Portuguese, and that’s led into some interesting studies. I don’t work with anything per se, but I read and listen a lot. And someday, maybe I’ll write something about it all. Brazil has become something of a consuming obsession with me.

Good luck with your work!

só uma questão….onde estão os codigos da programação e o processo de fabricação, uma ves que vc disse que é codigo aberto?

abraço

Oh that’s incredibly awesome, congratulations. When I contacted you and kyle, I had no idea that this is what you were doing down in Brazil. I just remember seeing all these parts and thinking, what are they doing?
